Blue Ridge Country - May/June 2017 - 49

lodge features spectacular views of the
Shenandoah Valley and is famous for
its night sky viewing. There are 25
rooms in the main lodge, with 71 additional rooms provided in small cabins,
multi-use buildings and suites. Rooms
start at $98 and hikers' discounts are
available.
Dine: Spottswood Dining Room +
New Market Taproom. The former offers basic southern-style cuisine like
barbeque and fried chicken. Taproom
features live family-friendly entertainment nightly, and has craft brews on
tap. goshenandoah.com/lodging/big-meadows-lodge
Hike: From the lodge, you can take
Blackrock Trail .2 mile to the Blackrock
overlook for great Shenandoah Valley
views. From there, hang a right on the
AT and head northward until you see the
sign for Lewis Creek Falls, whereupon
you'll turn left. You'll climb gently uphill
until you reach the 81-foot falls. Continue past the falls until the trail reconnects
with the AT, then head north back to the
lodge. Total, the loop is 3.4 miles.

This view of Carvins Cove, the reservoir for Roanoke, Virginia, unfolds after a 2.8-mile walk up from U.S. 220 at
Daleville; additional views are at Hay Rock, about 1.2 miles further south.

Daleville

Stay: Howard Johnson Inn. Sitting right
there where the AT crosses U.S. 220, you
can't get much more convenient. And
with a special "hikers' rate" of $50 per
night, you can't get much cheaper.
Tip: Fills up quickly on the weekend,
so be sure to make your reservation a
week in advance. 540-992-1234.
Dine: Walk to Three Li'l Pigs, a locally

owned and renowned barbecue restaurant. It's just over the hill headed north
on U.S. 220, and don't let its strip-center
location fool you. And if any of their
three cooked-in BBQ sauces don't fit,
then consider what the dining reviewer
for The Roanoker magazine says: "Three
Li'l Pigs offers a complete menu so the
non-barbecue lover can dine happily
as well. Their apps are varied and tasty.
