Blue Ridge Country - May/June 2017 - 53

Mountain, the trail to the inn briefly coincides with that heading to the AT. A
hikers-only affair, the Len Foote is one
of the few east coast facilities reachable
by foot alone. The sustainably designed
modern facilities feature twenty rooms
with comfortable amenities-hot showers, clean linens and home-cooked meals.
Starting at $170. hike-inn.com
Hike: Named one of the top 36 hikes
in America by Backpacker Magazine,
the 5-mile-long trail to the inn winds
through the Chattahoochee National
Forest and is rated mildly difficult. For a
treat, take the 4.4-mile route to Springer
Mountain and check out the AT's southern terminus. The latter is a bit tougher,
but well worth it.
Dine: Dinner and breakfast offered at
the inn lodge. Meals consist of hearty
Southern cooking served in the family
style, with ingredients grown either in
the park or locally sourced. As the inn is
isolated and there are so few rooms, the
group-dining is meant to get guests and
families mingling and chatting with one
another. ī†

from locally sourced seasonal ingredients.
We like the stuffed apricot squash with Israeli couscous, red lentils, swiss chard and
brown-butter Brussels sprouts.
Hike: Hike into Hot Springs and hop
on the AT at Bridge Street. Head south
for 1.6 miles, crossing over the French
Broad River and climbing up to the popular Lover's Leap, which offers three rock
promontories overlooking the river and
the town below.
Northward, you'll follow Bridge Street
onto N.C. Highway 209. Gently climb
through the forest for about 3.4 miles
and you'll reach the Deer Park Mountain
Shelter.
Shuttle: Located in the heart of town,
the Bluff Mountain Outfitters shuttle is
convenient and cheap-starts at just $10.
