1. The Cascades, Virginia
Height: 70 feet
Hike distance: 4 miles round trip, 2-3
hours to complete
Directions/Access: Take U.S. 460
into Pembroke and turn right onto
VA 623 (Cascades Drive), follow for
approximately 4 miles.
2. Crabtree Falls, Virginia
Height: 1,080 feet
Hike distance: 1.9 miles
Directions/Access: From Tye River Gap
on Blue Ridge Parkway (milepost 27.2),
head east on VA 56 4.6 miles and look
for parking on the right.
Virginia's Cascades was our readers' favorite falls.
3. Linville Falls, North Carolina
Height: 50 feet
Hike distance: 0.51 miles
Directions/Access: The main trail can
be reached by Milepost 316.5 of the
Blue Ridge Parkway, 1 mile north of the
U.S. 221 intersection.
4. Looking Glass Falls, Pisgah
National Forest, North Carolina
Height: 60 feet
Hike distance: N/A, roadside
Directions/Access: From the
intersection of NC 280 / U.S. 64 / U.S.
276 near Brevard, drive north on U.S.
276 for 5.6 miles and pull off in the
paved lane on the right. If you are
coming from the Blue Ridge Parkway,
get off on the U.S. 276 exit and drive
south for 9.2 miles. Looking Glass Falls
will be on your left.
5. Whitewater Falls, North
Height: 350-400 feet
Hike distance: 0.6 miles round trip
Directions/Access: Take I-240 West to
I-26 East. Go to the Asheville Airport/
Brevard Exit (exit 40) and take a right
onto NC 280. Drive to Brevard and take
U.S. 64 West (toward Lake Toxaway and
Highlands). At Sapphire, turn left on NC
281 and go south about 8 miles to the
Whitewater Falls entrance.
