LETTER
The Grandfather Mountain Parks
Greetings from Grandfather Mountain!
Visibility stretches for miles from this
mountain's lofty peaks, so we know a good
publication when we see one. As such, we
extend mile-high thanks for consistently
strong content.
However, we did notice an error in
the May/June issue, specifically in the
state parks sidebar in the "Best of the
Mountains" article, wherein the privately
owned Grandfather Mountain nature park
was mistaken for the adjacent Grandfather
Mountain State Park.
Grandfather Mountain, home to
the world-famous Mile High Swinging
Bridge, is a privately owned nature
preserve and attraction. It's operated and
maintained by the Grandfather Mountain
Stewardship Foundation, a nonprofit with
a mission of inspiring conservation of the
natural world by helping guests explore,
understand and value the wonders of
Grandfather Mountain.
In 2009, the foundation sold 2,700
acres of the mountain's backcounty
to the state of North Carolina for the
establishment of Grandfather Mountain
State Park. Since both parks share the
same mountain, the N.C. Division of
Parks and Recreation and the Grandfather
Mountain Stewardship Foundation work
side by side to manage and protect this
natural treasure for all to enjoy.
The remaining 720 acres are maintained
by the foundation as the popular nature
park and attraction, where guests can
enjoy panoramic views of the Western
North Carolina High Country, face-to-face
encounters with rescued black bears, river
otters, bald eagles, cougars and elk in the
environmental wildlife habitats, access to
12 miles of hiking trails, a nature museum,
documentary auditorium, 100-plus picnic
areas, restaurant, fudge shop, and more-
all included with the price of admission.
On the other hand, there is no charge
to access Grandfather Mountain State
Park from trailheads at the base of the
mountain (via both N.C. 105 and the Blue
Ridge Parkway), and visitors there are in
for some of the best hiking in the entire
Southeast, including the challenging Profile
Trail and the skyscraping Grandfather
Trail to MacRae Peak. These trails are
also accessible from the nature park and
attraction, which requires admission.
