Reunited, we follow a mostly-flat path
along a forested creek. "And if you have
a three-year-old or an 83-year-old, just
anybody can do this," Sgrillo says with
a smile.
But, be patient. Sometimes, when
crossing the creeks, you have to wait for
the llamas while they cool their heels.
Once, too, we had to pause while a couple of Jeeps made a splash in the creek
beside our traveling troupe.
Come fall, the trails of Horse Creek
ripen with leaves of "orange, red, yellow," says Sgrillo, who relocated to
Greeneville about a year ago. "The colors are magnificent."
I love Greeneville. I've been in and
out of this city since I was an infant in
1969. This is my where my grandparents, Linton and Gladys Boswell, spent
their entire lives. And each Sunday, after church, "Papaw" and "Grans" would
walk Main Street to the coffee shop at
the Hotel Brumley.
Today, the Hotel Brumley is the 51room General Morgan Inn (423-7871000), a plush palace where my wife,
Mary, and I spend a Saturday night in
luxury then feast on the most beautiful
sunny-side-up eggs in the library dining room.
Funny thing about the hotel: Legend says one dining room is haunted by
"Green Room Grace," a ghostly waitress
said to steal spoons off the tables!
Greeneville is famously known as the
home of Andrew Johnson, the nation's
17th president-and, yes, the first to
be impeached. Downtown, you'll find
a local history museum; a museum of
vintage cars; and a replica of the capitol
building for the short-lived and unofficial Lost State of Franklin.
Just a few miles from Main Street,
Mary and I try the juicy fried oysters
and ribeye steak at the Butcher's Block
(423-638-4485) on Greeneville's US11E Bypass.
Then, in nearby Tusculum, we take
time for candy-fried bacon-plus a BlackSEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018
