Of course, there is also all that fun to be found on the water… center, antique shops, and a wide variety of restaurants and hotels – or what many call “big city service with a small town atmosphere” – at the crossroads of U.S. 1, U.S. 58, and I-85. “We encourage people to visit our neat little shops,” says Frank Malone, the executive director of the South Hill Chamber of Commerce. “More than likely, you can find what you’re looking for.” One great place to try: The Martin Collection. Operated by longtime South Hill resident Jimmy Martin, this business sells and services a little bit of everything – from being a J.C. Penney catalog merchant to selling Dept. 56 figurines, picture frames and cards. “We have collectibles,” Martin says. “And we’re a collection of a lot of different businesses and services.” LaCrosse offers a small-town setting just east of South Hill. The Tobacco Heritage Trail makes a stop in the town that took its name because it was at the crossing of two railroads. Currently, officials are working to renovate a railroad hotel near Central Avenue that dates to 1917, says the town’s mayor, Will Woodall. “The best part of town? The friendly people,” says Woodall. “They try to help each other. And that’s what makes me want to stay.” And before you go: “Anybody who lives here says ‘lay-cross,’” says Woodall. South Hill Area ith all the frequent fishing tournaments held on Lake Gaston and Buggs Island Lake/Kerr Reservoir, folks simply call South Hill the “Tournament Town” for its proximity to the lakes. South Hill’s museums showcase railroad and tobacco heritage near the 1925 Colonial Theatre, which is being transformed into a fine arts center, office space, welcome center and a community meeting room.
