Lake Country Visitor & Newcomer Guide 2009 - (Page 25) Chase City R ich in history, Chase City is especially noted as a predominant center for education. In past times, Thyne Institute and Chase City High School graduated students who became successful leaders in careers ranging from doctors to high ranking military leaders. Presently, this strong tradition is still viable as the town’s Chase City Elementary School was among the first schools in Virginia to become SOL accredited and was among the elite in the nation to earn the distinction of being a Blue Ribbon School. This honor is a credit to the dedicated educators and strong parents in this community believing education is the key to continued success. The newly expanded Estes Center offers adult education tailored to the needs of the community. The town is proud of its museum, MacCallum More Museum and Gardens, as it portrays Chase City’s heritage. Indian artifacts and Thyne Institute’s history are permanent displays for visitors to enjoy. The museum is open daily to the public and is operated by citizen volunteers. Chase City’s Pavilion is located in the heart of town. It serves a diverse role as a public meeting “Every time I drive down the street or I’m in my yard, people location, a place for community worship, a farm- wave. And they don’t even know me,” says newcomer Kim Holtz. “It’s a very serene, quiet area.” er’s market, and as a site for large yard sales. Chase City has hosted the annual South Central Fair for more years than most people remember. Each fall, people from Mecklenburg and surrounding counties visit Chase City to attend the Fair’s free acts, to enjoy the midway rides, and to view the exhibits from the area schools. The traditional judging of farm animals, produce, and crafts still carries a strong interest level. According to Mayor Eddie Bratton, “The strength of Chase City is its creative and dedicated people, its churches, and its organizations. We have a nationally recognized elementary school here. We have rail service, natural gas pipeline access, six highways, tailored training facilities, state of the art medical clinics, fiber optic backbone for the internet, and we expect to have access to the county water system in the near future to enhance the natural water system we have enjoyed for over 100 years. Our location allows us to have a labor pool from three counties. Come and see us and I think you will like what you find. Better yet, come and bring your business and we will help you be the next Chase City success story.” Autumn Jubilee Fire Department’s Bike Fair Town of Chase City 319 North Main Street, Chase City VA 23924 Phone: 434-372-5136 • Fax 434-372-2587 • chasecity@chasecity.org Chase City Chamber of Commerce 316 North Main Street, Chase City VA 23924 Phone 434-372-0379 • Fax 434-372-4699 www.chasecitychamberofcomm.com • chasecityva@meckcom.net Visitor & Newcomer Guide http://www.chasecitychamberofcomm.com
