When they ask about you, they really want to know.” bviously, coming to the Lake Country, you’ll need a fishing pole. North Carolina’s Halifax County is home to the “Rockfish Capital of the World” for all the rockfish – also called striped bass. Lake Gaston spills across several counties in North Carolina, including Warren, Halifax and Northampton. Everywhere you go – be it Pretty Creek, Poe Creek, Church Hill or Summit, you’ll find plenty of small-town charm. “It’s peaceful, serene looking over the lake,” says realtor Angie Shoe. “You can be as peaceful and secluded as you wish. It’s a beautiful lake.” What’s also beautiful? The village of Littleton, astride the Warren-Halifax county line. “People in Littleton are family-oriented people,” says Shoe, who moved to the Lake Country region from Richmond, VA, and decided to raise a family in the area. “When you know people, and you know what your children are involved with, you can’t trade that.” The shops of Littleton’s Main Street Station offer all kinds of art, clothing, antiques, home and garden accessories, coffee and food. You can also catch a show at the Lakeland Theatre Company, which stages about 12 to 14 inhouse productions each year. Shows have included “High School Musical,” “South Pacific,” “Steel Magnolias” and “Driving Miss Daisy.” “We have a very fine time,” says Managing Director Wally Hurst. “People compare our shows not to Raleigh or Richmond but to New York.” “It was nice to be able to come back here,” says Hurst, who grew up in Warrenton, attended Duke University and spent time as a California attorney. “People are nice to you, because they were brought up to be cordial and friendly. When they ask about you, they really want to know.” < O Visitor & Newcomer Guide http://www.visithalifax.com
