Lake Country Visitor & Newcomer Guide 2009 - (Page 35) B R E A K FA ST ON THE LAKE, LUNCH BY THE OCEAN L ee Nicholson looked everywhere – practically everywhere – before he decided to retire in the Lake Country. And for this retired utility company executive, the choices got narrowed down in a hurry. Phoenix? “Too hot,” Nicholson says. California? “Too liberal.” Florida? “Too many bugs.” But, at 84, as it turned out, Nicholson decided to simply make his home at Bracey, near the shores of Lake Gaston. “We found it kind of by mistake,” Nicholson says. “We looked for a lake and a place so we could easily get to the ocean.” Well, that’s Lake Country. Here, you could have breakfast on the lakeshore and, by lunchtime, find yourself staring at the waves at Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Nicholson, for one, prefers Lake Gaston, because the water level rarely fluctuates, he says. Here, he says, “We found we could put in a solid boat dock and build a house.” Soon, too, he became involved in community organizations, like the Rotary and Ruritan clubs. He’s a member of Leadership Mecklenburg, a group of community supporters. And, yet, this World War II veteran also remains busy as an energy consultant. Sometimes, too, you might find Nicholson involved in projects to help support local students, like holding a pizza party for 7th graders at Park View Middle School. Nicholson’s character is a testament to the fine life available in the Lake Country, says Frank Malone, the executive director of the South Hill Chamber of Commerce. “He lived all over this country and could have picked any place to settle but chose this one,” Malone says. “And, it’s his natural enthusiasm that has gotten him involved here.” lize ! ecia ntry e Sp Cou W ake nL i 35 LAKE LIFE www.Century21OnTheLake.com Roof and Floor Trusses Quality Building Materials 1118 West Danville Street South Hill,Virginia 23970 1-800-451-1531 (434) 447-7191 Visitor & Newcomer Guide http://www.Century21OnTheLake.com
