Lake Country Visitor & Newcomer Guide 2009 - (Page 44) 44 advanced health care When the latest medical advances are carried out by people who care about their community, the result is great health care. Lake Country residents don’t have to leave home to find up-to-date medical care provided by friendly caring people. COMMUNITY MEMORIAL HEALTHCENTER There are several different definitions of the word “community,” one of them being common ownership, and that is central to the mission of Community Memorial Healthcenter (CMH) in South Hill. CMH is one of the few stand-alone “community owned, nonprofit” hospitals that remain today. Since opening its doors in 1954 for the community and by the community, much has changed, but the community ownership and pride in its local health care remain strong. Over the last 54 years CMH has evolved and kept pace with the technological advances. Today they are licensed for 284 beds and provide a wide array of in-patient services, which includes 99 acute care, 21 behavioral health and 164 skilled and long-term care beds, along with outpatient services such as cardiac catheterization, dialysis, home health, hospice and many others. Most recently CMH has changed the Lake Country area with its latest advancement in health care: its new Cancer and Rehab Centers. This state-of-the-art facility was first envisioned eight years ago, and was made possible through the support and commitment of the community. The Cancer and Rehab Centers are comprised of three centers, the Cancer and Specialty Care Center, the Rehabilitation Center, and the Exercise Therapy Center; all housed under one roof.
