Libraries Just how did these 75,000 acres of lakes come to be? 1823 - In order to develop the Roanoke River into a water highway the Roanoke Navigation Canal was built around the falls between Weldon and Roanoke Rapids. 1953 - Kerr Reservoir was built by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to produce electricity and for flood control. Kerr Dam generates an average of 426,749,000 kilowatt hours per year. Fifty-eight percent of the power sold goes to Virginia Electric Power Company and forty-two percent to the Carolina Power and Light Company. 1955 - Roanoke Rapids Dam was built by VEPCO forming Roanoke Rapids Lake. 1963 - Gaston Dam was built creating Lake Gaston which can generate 650,000 megawatt hours of electricity annually for Dominion North Carolina Power. 1976 - The remnants of the Roanoke Navigation Canal were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
