Lee of the Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered to General Ulysses Grant, on April 9, 1865, ending the Civil War. The National Park encompasses approximately 1,800 acres and includes the McLean home (surrender site) and the village of Appomattox Court House. There are 27 original 19th-century structures.
