WHAT'S NEW IN GREEN BUILDING
What makes a house green? Many of Southwest Virginia's energy-efficient green homes have some or all
of these latest features that builders claim will reduce
* Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV): A device that
that controls ventilation and humidity inside a house
by transferring air inside and outside. This improves in-

The three-bedroom, two-and a half bathroom house
also is equipped with a high-efficiency heat pump for
both heat and air. It's a zoned system, which heats or
cools different areas of the house and automatically
switches from one floor to another when needed.
"It's not running constantly for both floors," says
A fresh-air return also is located outside of the cou-
door air quality and can reduce heating and cooling use.
* Double, triple pane windows: Windows that include
two or three window panes separated by air or gas space
that reduce heat transfer into the house. These windows
also insulate houses from outside noise.
* Tankless water heaters: These devices heat water
directly without use of a storage tank, providing hot
water as needed and reducing heating costs.
* Radiant barrier sheathing: Typically installed in an
attic, these barriers consist of a reflective material, such
as aluminum foil, that reflect radiant heat, instead of
absorbing it. These barriers may reduce a home's cooling costs by 5 to 10 percent if the climate is generally
warm and sunny.
* Rooftop solar panels: Solar panels that convert sunlight into electricity through an inverter. Solar electricity
powers the house. -JKB
