The Roanoker - May/June 2015 - (Page 84)
A recent book from Tim Barnwell (cover above) provides detail on overlooks from the Blue Ridge Parkway and other
points, including Mill Mountain. Some of those overlooks are more inviting since a combined pruning effort of the park
service and Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway has opened up vistas that had been hidden for years by mature trees.
READY TO EQUIP YOUR OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS with
full information on what they'll see on their coming visit
up to the Roanoke Star? Or from many of the area overlooks from the Blue Ridge Parkway?
Writer/photographer Tim Barnwell's new book provides all of that and lots more.
In 120 informative, comprehensive, pretty pages, Barnwell presents identification of every mountain and landmark visible from every Blue Ridge Parkway overlook. The
visuals alone could carry the book, but Barnwell adds both
text and context to each, covering access, geography and
geology, bits of history; and often includes smaller detail
photos of signature points within the overall viewshed
photo. The facing page present the Mill Mountain view.
"Vistas" is published by Numinous Editions. It's at
bookstores and at barnwellphoto.com, which also offers
deluxe formats of his three earlier books.
