From music to history, art to artisan wine,
and everything in between, the Roanoke Valley is rich in arts
and culture.
You don't have to walk more than a half-mile radius in downtown
Roanoke to discover the many amenities the valley has to offer on
the arts and culture scene. A good place to start is in the heart of
downtown at Center in the Square. It's the city's museum hub.
"We are southwest Virginia's destination for arts, culture and interactive exhibits," says Center in the Square President and General Manager Dr. Jim Sears. "We are on the cutting edge, and we
are the place to visit because we have all these cultural amenities
under one roof."
Housed under one roof are The Harrison Museum of African American Culture, The History Museum of Western Virginia, and the Science Museum of Western Virginia. And brand new this year is the
Roanoke Pinball Museum, which is a must-see for video game enthu-
siasts. Get lost exploring the exhibits, and sooner or later you may
also stumble upon the in-house aquarium and Butterfly Garden. The
view from the rooftop of Center in the Square is not to be missed.
If history is what you're after, you can gain a better understanding of Roanoke's many references to its railroad town roots by visiting the Virginia Museum of Transportation, also located downtown. There's something here for the kid in all of us as you take
the helm of an antique locomotive caboose and marvel at their
life-sized aviation exhibit. History buffs should definitely plan visits
to the nearby Vinton Historical Society & Museum and the Salem
Museum & Historical Society.
Time it just right, and you can experience big-city culture by attending a performance of Opera Roanoke. They have productions
