Beyond the Classroom
By Liz Long
Exciting things are brewing for our education systems, offering students at every level
unique chances to learn and grow on their path to success. Students in the Roanoke Valley
benefit from resources outside of the classrooms to prepare them for successful careers. The
school systems in the cities of Roanoke and Salem, and counties of Roanoke, Franklin and
Botetourt provide excellent learning opportunities that extend beyond the school walls.
Higher Education Entices
The higher education system in our area proves to be successful, with multiple accolades and opportunities for students to further their post-college careers.
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute was placed
among the Best of Research and Development in Virginia, joining about 50 economic developers, educators and
economists in the south for this coveted title from Southern Business & Development magazine's Best of Economic
Development in the American South edition. The institute
leads research projects on pavement, mobility, lighting and
more, with researchers focusing efforts into the development
and deployment of next generation vehicular technology.
Virginia Tech recently opened its leadership coaching institute for healthcare and life sciences industries, dedicating their development to the next generation of industry
leaders. The Healthcare Coaching Institute, a partnership
of Virginia Tech's Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement, helps coaches complete certification programs, which allow them to earn more money than those
without. Presented through Virginia Tech's Continuing and
Professional Education and the first of its kind specifically
related to healthcare and leadership coaching, the certification program draws participants from hospitals, provider
networks, and insurance companies, as well as entities related to pharmaceutical and biotechnology fields.
