Easy to Be Active in the Valley

It's no wonder Roanokers have a passion for the outdoors,
given the multitude of options available to them on a daily basis. Whether you're a hiker, biker,
climber or swimmer, there are plenty of spots to get outside and enjoy fresh mountain air. The
greenways offer miles of urban paths, while the nearby Appalachian Trail can be accessed in
mere minutes. Add in a jaunt at Smith Mountain Lake and catching a few NCAA division championships or local hockey games, and you have full weekends of fun in the valley.
The surge in popularity for outdoor activities around the
Roanoke Valley can be traced perhaps to the growing greenway
system, which originated in the late '90s and been expanding
ever since. The Roanoke River Greenway, the spine of the
system, still has a few missing links at this point, including a
four mile section between Roanoke City and Salem that would
create a longer, continuous route.
Start your journey at Fallon Park on the Roanoke/Vinton
line, walk, run or bike over the Tinker Creek Greenway (which
includes an impressive z-shaped bridge). Navigate several
quiet roads in southeast Roanoke until you connect with the
Roanoke River Greenway again at 13th Street. From there
it's about six miles to the current terminus in the Norwich
neighborhood.
