The Roanoker - November/December 2017 - 23
THANK YOU, KURT
Thank you, Kurt
In 1982, I hired Kurt, who had been a young freelance writer working for us for a couple of years. With a ton of writing talent but very little
formal journalism training or background, Kurt began his career as editor of The Roanoker. Limited by tiny budgets, minimal resources, and tight
deadlines, he quickly transformed the editorial department at LeisureMedia360 into a well-oiled machine.
In no time, Kurt was managing and directing the editorial content of not only The Roanoker, but all LeisureMedia360 publications. When Blue
Ridge Country debuted in 1988, Kurt assembled mountain writers and editorials from across our eight-state coverage area and a year and a half
later, received the award from the Regional Magazine Publisher Association as the BEST NEW PUBLICATION OF THE YEAR.
Ten years later, the Virginia Tourism Corporation selected Leisure Publishing to be the official publisher of the Virginia is for Lovers Travel
Guide, based on the quality and editorial excellence of Blue Ridge Country, The Roanoker and LeisureMedia360's other titles. That relationship,
shepherded by Kurt's steady hand, has endured for almost 20 years and it is a point of company pride that Virginia's key tourism publication has
been produced here in Roanoke all those years.
The Roanoker and everything LeisureMedia360 has done and accomplished is directly attributable to the talents and leadership of Kurt Rheinheimer.
All of us today, as well as the many, many former employees who worked at LeisureMedia360 over the last 35 years, owe a great debt to this talented,
Years ago, I presented Kurt with a Swiss-made chronograph watch which he wears today. That watch symbolized the Germanic precision and
craftsmanship with which Kurt Rheinheimer has directed the editorial voice of LeisureMedia360 and its titles. Speaking for all of us here:
Kurt, we love you. You've been a blessing to us and to the community.
