Community Benefit Fall Report 2007 - (Page 13) Community Benefit Report rates of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) than combat veterans. Presented by the Samaritan Counseling Center and the YWCA Sexual Assault Prevention & Counseling Center, the conference attracted more than 300 people and featured a dozen workshops on PTSD-related topics as well as keynote speakers who are leading authorities on trauma-related emotional disorders. Lancaster General is proud to be part of the SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) support team, which is staffed by emergency department nurses who offer 24-hour-a-day assistance with adult sexual assault cases. We also collaborate with the Lancaster County Children & Youth Agency, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office and the YWCA of Lancaster to support OASIS (Organizations Allied for Safety Intervention & Support), which provides a centralized place where child-abuse victims can be safe and cases can be investigated effectively. In 2007, more than 270 children received support through OASIS. OASIS celebrated its first anniversary in 2006 by receiving Associate Member status with the National Children’s Alliance (NCA), a distinction that increases OASIS’s access to additional resources. Another major component of our work is outreach to the community at large. We partner with the Samaritan Counseling Center, an interfaith ministry providing counseling, education and consultation for abuse victims, and we support the efforts of the Lancaster Coalition Against Family Violence, which produces and distributes domestic violence posters and crisis resource cards throughout the county. (For free copies, call the coalition at 544-3222.) Earlier this year, we also unveiled our new “Domestic Violence” section on our Web site. The site provides resources and links that are helpful for victims, families, employers and others in the community. Visit the site to order information and supplies. domestic violence Linda Crockett spends her days helping victims of domestic violence find the strength to make healthy changes. About three years ago, Crockett began partnering with Lancaster General to enhance its clinical services and community programs related to domestic violence. “As a community leader, Lancaster General is assuming a major role in helping identify and respond to victims and in working to prevent more violence from occurring,” says Crockett, director of the “Walking Together: Support for Playing a role in reducing Survivors of Family Violence Program” at the Samaritan Counseling Center. On a daily basis, Crockett works with victims who are benefiting from Lancaster General programs and community partnerships that are focused on domestic-violence issues. “Something as simple as a nonthreatening question during a routine medical appointment can have a major impact,” she says. “All of a sudden, the woman realizes, ‘Wow, maybe this abuse isn’t normal. Maybe I could live a different way.’ ” By Your Side on the web To visit our new Domestic Violence pages, visit the Lancaster General Web site at www.LancasterGeneral.org and search for “domestic violence.” A comprehensive list of Family Crisis Resources is available there.
