Community Benefit Fall Report 2007 - (Page 14) Lancaster General We’re By Your Side W e strive to advance community residents’ health and well-being through every phase of their lives. In addition to the efforts addressing the health priorities outlined earlier in this report, we collaborate with local partners to provide programs that fill other critical needs throughout the lifespan. And we are committed to providing access to these programs to all, regardless of one’s ability to pay. Birth to Preschool Healthy Beginnings Plus Lancaster General’s Healthy Beginnings Plus program provides expectant mothers with prenatal care and guidance that helps ensure a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. Last December, St. Joseph Ministries honored Healthy Beginnings Plus for helping reduce dental disease in pregnant women, which can impact fetal development. The program has screened more than 2,000 pregnant women and referred 324 of them for treatment. The women who received treatment had a preterm labor rate of 3 percent, compared to 11 percent for those who did not receive treatment. Nurse-Family Partnership Lancaster General nurses work to promote health and wellness during a child’s earliest years. The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) program works in the home with first-time mothers—from pregnancy until the child’s second birthday. The Lancaster General program is supported by the United Way and the state Department of Public Welfare. Since 2001, Lancaster’s NFP program has assisted 376 clients with smoking cessation, breastfeeding initiation, immunizations, prevention of child abuse and completion of high school diplomas. Ninety-two percent of the infants and toddlers in the local program are on track in verbal, emotional and motor development. Those below their developmental level are working with Early Intervention. The infants and toddlers in the program have a 98 percent immunization completion rate. School-Age Children Internet Safety Seminar Last summer, Lancaster General hosted and participated in a free seminar to help parents protect their school-age children from online predators. The event was organized by OASIS and included participants from local police departments, the county District Attorney’s Office, Children & Youth Agency, local pediatricians, YWCA of Lancaster and Lancaster General. Parents learned the warning signs of online stalking; how to minimize their child’s risk; and how to preserve evidence for law enforcement investigations. Safe Kids Lancaster General is the lead organization for Safe Kids Lancaster County, a coalition of community organizations and volunteers working to prevent accidental injuries to children 14 and under. Safe Kids has: • Partnered with Nurse-Family Partnership to provide 100 child safety gates that help prevent falls on stairs. Through all Stages of Life, A kids’ healthy shopping tour helped teach children to make healthy food choices. 14 http://www.lancastergeneral.org/content/Healthy_Beginnings_Plus.htm http://www.sjhm.org/ http://www.sjhm.org/ http://www.co.lancaster.pa.us/lanco/cwp/view.asp?a=464&Q=262153&lancoNav=|5720|6220| http://www.co.lancaster.pa.us/lanco/cwp/view.asp?a=501&q=515952&lancoNav=| http://www.ymcalancaster.org/ http://www.co.lancaster.pa.us/lanco/cwp/view.asp?a=501&q=515952&lancoNav=| http://www.ymcalancaster.org/ http://www.safekids.org/ http://www.uwlanc.org/ http://www.uwlanc.org/ http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/
