AEDs in Schools In partnership with area emergency medical services organizations, Lancaster General donated 60 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to Lancaster County schools and nonprofit organizations. The donations are part of the Lancaster General Heart Center AED Program, which includes free CPR training. To date, 15 school districts are participating. The American Heart Association estimates that at least 20,000 lives could be saved annually with AEDs, which are designed to shock the heart into proper rhythm. Adolescents Healthcare Careers Lancaster General College of Nursing & Health Sciences partners with the School District of Lancaster to promote healthcare careers to high school students. Through the McCaskey School of Health Sciences, students in grades nine through 12 shadow healthcare workers, learn about career opportunities and participate in paid internships. Hundreds of employees from the College and Lancaster General Hospital volunteer as teachers and mentors. Other Teen Programs Lancaster General offers Growing Together programs that provide an opportunity for mothers and daughters to discuss their relationship as well as physical changes that occur during puberty. More than 100 mothers and daughters attended this program this year. Lancaster General nurses facilitate the ThinkFirst program, a National Injury Prevention Foundation program that teaches people how to reduce their risk of injury. ThinkFirst programs educate young people about their personal vulnerability and the importance of making safe choices. More than 2,400 students attended ThinkFirst programs during the past year. Adults Care for Breast Cancer Survivors The Breast Care Center is a community resource that provides support, breast health education and coordination of services for women of all ages. The center employs two breast care nurses who meet women at the time of their breast cancer diagnosis and provide education and support throughout their treatment program. Lancaster General also offers free weekly classes for women who have completed breast cancer treatment within the past 18 months. The center benefited more than 300 people during the past year. “Heart of Healing–The Journey Beyond Breast Cancer” classes help women learn to nurture their body, mind and spirit through self-care and creativity. Heart of Healing is made possible through a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Retired physician Dr. John May HealthyWoman Through the HealthyWoman Program, Lancaster General provides free clinical breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams and Pap tests to underserved women between the ages of 40 and 64. In 2007, we screened 144 women. Seventeen women were identified for additional treatment, which was covered at no cost through the program. Our services are enhanced by the volunteer efforts of Dr. John May, a retired OB/GYN who donates about 15 volunteer hours a month to the program. Prostate Screenings Lancaster General partners with local urologists to provide free prostate screenings for low-income and uninsured individuals or people whose insurance does not cover prostate screenings. We recently screened 158 people at three locations in Lancaster County and identified 22 men for follow-up treatment. 15 http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/aboutwic/wicataglance.htm http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/aboutwic/wicataglance.htm http://www.lancastergeneral.org/content/Healthy_Beginnings_Plus.htm http://www.faulknercars.com/ http://www.cityoflancasterpa.com/lancastercity/cwp/view.asp?a=670&q=517345 http://www.faulknercars.com/ http://www.thinkfirst.org/ http://www.health.state.pa.us/PHP/HW/default.htm http://www.lancastergeneral.org/content/LancasterGeneralHeartCenter.htm http://www.lancastergeneral.org/content/LancasterGeneralHeartCenter.htm http://www.lancastergeneral.org/content/Breast_Health.htm http://www.americanheart.org/ http://www.lancastergeneralcollege.edu/content/default.htm http://www.lancaster.k12.pa.us/ http://www.lancastergeneralcollege.edu/content/default.htm http://www.lancaster.k12.pa.us/ http://cms.komen.org/komen/index.htm
