Community Benefit Fall Report 2007 - (Page 6) Lancaster General Everyone Has Access To Care t Lancaster General, one of our core strategies is to “foster a collaborative approach to mission and citizenship.” As we focus on meeting the needs of the entire community, we work to ensure that all Lancaster Countians have access to quality care, regardless of their ability to pay. Free and low-cost programs are essential. One of our newest endeavors is Project Access Lancaster County (PALCO), a communitywide partnership that follows a national healthcare delivery model to mobilize physician volunteers and align existing medical resources to care for low-income, uninsured patients. Eleven percent of Lancaster County’s population is uninsured, with 60 percent of those living on a low income. Since PALCO’s start this past summer, more than 600 physician volunteers have committed to treating our community’s uninsured patients. Ensuring That A The local project has been spearheaded by a leadership team. Without their leadership, PALCO would not be where it is today. Based with the Lancaster County Medical Society, PALCO offers many benefits: • Uninsured county residents receive the care they need, which improves the health of our entire community. • The cost of care is divided among a large number of volunteer providers, who now share responsibility for caring for unisured members of the community. • Physicians, pharmacists, the county’s four hospitals, local healthcare workers, local nonprofit agencies and the national Project Access network come together for the common good. In another beneficial partnership, the March of Dimes Pennsylvania Chapter awarded a $25,000 grant this spring to Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital’s Prematurity Risk Reduction Program. The program, a cooperative endeavor between Lancaster General and SouthEast Lancaster Health Services, reduces the number of premature births in Lancaster, especially among the Latino population. The program teams nurse case managers with women who are not eligible for medical assistance but are at high risk for preterm pregnancies. The women receive education and healthcare services that promote healthy pregnancy and reduce the risk of premature and low-birth-weight babies. Proving the benefit of collaboration, the three-year partnership between Lancaster General’s Healthy Beginnings Plus (HBP) and St. Joseph Health Ministries is yielding impressive results.
