Community Benefit Fall Report 2007 - (Page 7) Community Benefit Report dental habits and dental disease in pregnant women to prevent preterm birth, and it has consistently demonstrated a reduced preterm birth outcome of 3 percent. Incredibly, that compares with a 22 percent preterm birthrate for women who need medical assistance and are not part of the HBP experience. To raise awareness of the prevalence of the uninsured and their challenges, Lancaster General joined other area healthcare providers in April 2007 to sponsor a legislative breakfast with presentations about healthcare coverage for children, the governor’s “Prescription for Pennsylvania,” PALCO and caring for the uninsured. The partners included Water Street Rescue Mission Clinic; SouthEast Lancaster Health Services; Welsh Mountain Medical Center; and Hope Within Community Health Center. Together, along with the Lancaster General Family Health Services Clinic, the clinics had 8,480 uninsured visits in 2006. To ensure city residents have access to convenient healthcare services, Lancaster General operates the Family Health Services clinic at Lancaster General Hospital and clinics at Fulton and Carter & MacRae elementary schools. Retired pediatrician Dr. Clark McSparren volunteers one day per week at the school-based health clinics. Children of all ages are served through ChildProtect, a free immunization initiative that started 15 years ago with the Amish community and is now in locations throughout Lancaster County. Since its beginning, more than 65,700 children have received more than 146,000 immunizations through ChildProtect. Last fiscal year, the program benefited 789 children. Retired pediatrician Dr. Clark McSparren volunteers at the school-based health clinics. Other examples of initiatives that provide access to care include the HealthyWoman Program, which offers wellness exams and screenings for women between the ages of 40 through 64 with low to moderate income. More than 220 women have benefited from this program this year. The Dental Health Network, a network of dentists who volunteer their time to low-income, uninsured adults and children served more than 680 people so far this year. And now is the season when we provide flu shots for senior citizens and individuals at high risk. 7 http://www.rxforpa.com/ http://www.welshmountain.com/ http://selhs.org/ http://www.welshmountain.com/ http://www.hopewithin.org/Default.htm http://www.hopewithin.org/Default.htm http://www.lancastergeneral.org/content/FHS.htm http://www.health.state.pa.us/PHP/HW/default.htm http://www.lancastergeneral.org/content/ChildProtect_WellnessCenter.htm http://www.lancastergeneral.org/content/DHNWellness.htm
