LiNKED Spring 2008 - (Page 10) 10 | PODCAST “THE PODCASTS ARE NOT NECESSARILY A TOOL TO FIND YOUR WAY THROUGH THE CITY THEY ARE THE ARMCHAIR TRAVELS FOR PEOPLE SITTING AT HOME AND MAY NEVER GO” “Anybody who hears Michael go into a café in Prague can’t help but feel like they’re with him—it’s an amazing value to readers.” William Bostwick, who previously worked at NPR, has been guiding Dwell listeners through New York and Chicago. One of his recent tours was a walking guide in Chicago for a Ukrainian village neighborhood where artists and designers priced out of Wicker Park area have congregated. LINKED SPRING 2008 Walking with Bostwick, we start at the corner of Damon and Division streets. For the next five minutes or so, we learn about where to shop, what to eat for a snack (Bostwick recommends the mint or root beer cupcakes) and what to expect at a toy store for grown-ups. “You won’t want to leave without buying something,” Bostwick says. When he opens a heavy metal sliding door, we hear the door open—putting us in the middle of his interview. When he talks about unexpected gems in the design world, we realize that Bostwick’s tours may be one of them. Cannell was the one to create Dwell’s first podcast—about Brooklyn. “Brooklyn has become a hotbed for great, new design,” he says. So he figured out what he wanted to say and grabbed his digital recorder to take listeners on the tour. Other tours, some created by other contributors, include Venice, Calif., New York restaurants, SoHo, Venice, and Clement Street in San Francisco where listeners are guided to “places that might otherwise go unnoticed, from a Chinese bakery to eye-catching fish in an outof-the-way pet store. “Podcasts allow intimacy— they transport you in time and place in a way that print can’t,” Cannell says.
