22 BLOG WATCH EDITOR, BLOGGER, EDITOR, BLOGGER Dual roles require writing mind to shift back and forth ason Fell doesn’t struggle in his roles as both associate editor/news for FOLIO: magazine and as a FOLIO: blogger. “I guess writing with an opinion is something that some ‘old school’ news writers grapple with but, after a while, you get used to separating the two,” says the 2003 graduate of Emerson College. Before FOLIO:’s Web site relaunch near the end of 2007, blogging seemed less a priority than breaking news. “Now, we have a sizeable and knowledgeable stable of bloggers,” Fell explains. Multiple entries by various editors post daily at FOLIO: Personalities— The Blog Page (www. foliomag.com/blogs). The entries vary from breaking news in the magazine industry to insight and commentary on subjects of the day as well as promotions of items inside the print version. “Writing with a point of view allows you to be funny, snarky, irreverent, to poke fun and to criticize— things you can’t usually do in normal reporting,” Fell says. “It’s a nice change of pace from writing news.” He says that FOLIO: has a loose blogging schedule that encourages staff editors to post a certain number of blog entries each week even though that might not always work out. “FOR ME BLOGGING HAPPENS ORGANICALLY.
