LiNKED Spring 2008 - (Page 5) SOCIAL MEDIA 5 WORLD’S LARGEST ONLINE DINING TABLE CNET’s marriage of CHOW Magazine and Chowhound.com expands family of foodies Chowhound.com carries a spirit similar to its founding 11 years ago—dozens of message boards where foodies and others interested in food can share recipes, restaurant recommendations or suggestions of where to buy hard-to-find foods and beverages. But now, Chowhound has the added spark of enhanced participation from CHOW Magazine (and now Chow.com) readers. Two years ago, CNET purchased the previously unrelated Chowhound.com and CHOW magazine and converged the print and online worlds. “They are closely linked, overlapping users, but there still is a sense of Chowhound as a community,” says Jacquilynne Schlesier, Chowhound.com community manager. Working with a primarily user-generated site (100,000 users who post 2,000 to 4,000 messages daily) requires significant moderation to sustain the friendly and open atmosphere that keeps Chowhound users returning and welcomes new users every month. Schlesier, who was a volunteer moderator before CNET purchased the site, says the paid staff still works with volunteers (17 at last count) to help police the site. WWW.LINKED-MAGAZINE.COM “We’re not into Internet flame wars,” Schlesier says. “It’s a food o discussion. It needs to be civilized ” civilized.” Monitoring the boards also involves keeping users on topic in their discussions. Chowhound is a resource for food questions and interest, not a chat forum. Schlesier explains that the moderators also work to keep the users honest, reducing the potential for conflicts of interest by posters who may have ulterior motives. CHOW MAGAZINE’S STAFF POSTS VIDEO INTERVIEWS ONLINE WITH THE LATEST CONTESTANT KICKED OFF BRAVO’S “TOP CHEF.” WHICH IN TURN EXPANDS THE AUDIENCE AT CHOWHOUND.COM, WHO GATHER ON THE BOARDS TO TALK ABOUT THE LATEST EPISODE AND CHOW INTERVIEW. http://www.chowhound.com http://www.chowhound.com http://www.chow.com http://www.chowhound.com http://www.chowhound.com http://WWW.LINKED-MAGAZINE.COM
