People make travel plans around design,” Cannell explains. “So we thought why not help them? Why not provide a guide to a neighborhood or a city? “So Dwell.com goes with you as you walk the streets in Brooklyn or visit landmark designs in Prague.” Call it an accousti-guide to design. Dwell has been creating podcasts with these walking tours for the last few months and have seen their podcast visitors increase steadily. Listeners can download the walking guides, allowing them to be transported at their desks or hear about the sites when they’re traveling in that city. On the same page as the podcast download, Dwell posts Google maps with push pins for each stop on the walking tour. More people, though, must prefer the desk-mode travel. When a slide show or video of the location is included with the podcast, the number of visitors lights up like a scoreboard, Cannell says. Dwell.com experiences 300,000 unique visitors each month, according to its media guide. It plans to soon make its podcasts available on iTunes. Cannell says creating ideas for podcasts is similar to generating ideas for articles in the magazines— the editors and podcast journalists figure out what the hot neighborhoods and topics are.
