Lancaster Road Runners Club - March/April 2008 - (Page 7) Runner Profile – Marcus Grimm Thanks to Marcus, our newsletter is now available on our website. Marcus is Head of Tales (aka Marketing Guru) for NXTBook Media (Pronounced “Next Book” - www.nxtbookmedia. com) in Lancaster. NXTBook takes printed materials (or mere PDFs) and puts them on the web. Doing so saves publishers gazillions of dollars on printing, paper, and postage costs, and it also saves all those trees. The service is especially valuable to publishers on one continent who have customers on another continent. For example, if your business has a magazine that you’re currently mailing to customers in Europe or Australia, you could save a lot by putting the publication on the web. So, if your business is mailing magazines, newsletters, or just about anything else to Khartoum or Rohrerstown, check out NXTBook Media and see if you can benefit from publishing your stuff on your website. NXTBook Media is a neat company. The owners instructed the workforce to use the technology for nonprofits, and we’re one of the first to take advantage of that generous offer. And, Marcus is just one of many dedicated runners at NXTBook. So now, back to our regularly scheduled profile. Marcus has had an interesting running career. After competing at Solanco and for one year at E-Town College, he quit running for about 14 years. Then, in 2006, he had one of those visceral experiences that led him back to the roads and the trails. “Chasing my kids (Allie and Harrison) He’s also had the fortune (misfortune?) of falling with the wrong crowd. He’s now a regular at trail races such as the Half-Wit and the Ugly Mudder, where he went down 3 times. Whenever he does go out to run, Marcus has to deal with an issue that most of us don’t face - diabetes. He was 13 when he received a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. That means that his body produces no insulin. So, he must monitor his blood sugar closely. He has an insulin pump which he wears most of the time, but not during all his runs, just when he’s running more than 90 minutes. It’s an inconvenience, but not something that he considers a hardship. “It’s just part of life,” he said. One effect that his diabetes does have on his running is that he always eats before a run. He literally carboloads 45 minutes before every run, and he’s very aware of refueling and rehydrating if his runs go beyond an hour. Otherwise, he’s just a regular runner who’s faster than most of us. Marcus, the kids and wife Heather live in the Hempfield School District, and Allie is hopeful of running the Race Against Racism this April. Marcus Grimm was way too hard,” he said. Faced with that painful realization, he resumed his running career, and quickly regained his form. His first adult race was the 2006 Amos Herr 5K, which he finished in 26:14. He then improved quickly and dramatically. In 2007, he ran the Jingle Bell in 19:47 and the Harrisburg Marathon in 3:18. So, when you go to our website and see our excellent newsletter up there, extend your thanks to Marcus and the folks at NXTBook Media.
