Louisiana TIMED Program Annual Report 2007-2008 - (Page 16) U.S. 61 The 20-mile long U.S. 61 project is being widened to a four-lane highway from north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to the Mississippi State Line. The project is divided into four segments. Two segments are complete and two segments are under construction. While planning, design and field work can be carried out at any time during the year; the timing of each phase of road construction is critical to completing a notable project. Having the right-of-way on the U.S. 61 project cleared early allowed for the utilities to be relocated and out of the way of the widening construction. Clearing contracts were let in advance of the construction contracts to help meet a 2010 completion schedule. The $95 million project is 43 percent complete. Interesting Find Archaeologists working ahead of road construction crews uncovered evidence of a West Feliciana Parish plantation’s attempt to go into sugar production before the Civil War.
