Bowlers Journal International - January 2008 - (Page 18) PROBOWLING Ore. The Dick Weber Open, this season sponsored by Motel 6, is a throwback, open-field event going into its third edition. Although Don Johnson died in 2003, the Buckeye State Classic named after him and scheduled for Feb. 26-March 2 at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus, will be making its debut. The tournament evolved as a result of some well-received and very successful fundraising events to combat diabetes, developed in Johnson’s name, starting with a PBA Western Region tournament spearheaded by Tony Reyes. A similar fundraiser in connection with a PBA Regional in Cincinnati was promoted by Brian Himmler last summer. Jimmy Johnson, Don’s oldest son, has been involved in both regional events and, as a Columbus resident, helped pave the way for a national stop by working with Sequoia Lanes proprietor Tim Voss. “It’s an honor and a thrill to have the tournament named after my dad,” said Johnson, himself the winner of the 1990 Brunswick Memorial World Open. “We are planning a special event prior to the tournament on Monday called 'Carnibowl' that will include many of the Tour players and Ohio State players. Plus, the proprietor is donating $5 of every pro-am entry toward the fight against diabetes. “For every $12,000 we raise, we are able to purchase an insulin pump and two years of supplies for a worthy donor,” adds Johnson. “We were able to do that with the money raised during the Cincinnati Regional.” Johnson expects he’ll be too busy during the Tour stop to even think about bowling in the event himself. Besides, his bowling these days is mostly confined to one league a week, as he’s gone into the real estate business and is raising three children with wife Myndi. Don Johnson, the 1971 and ’72 PBA Player of the Year, died after suffering a heart attack, likely precipitated by diabetes, at the age of 63.
