Bowlers Journal International - January 2008 - (Page 38) Throw a Few More Logs on the Air Conditioner The Denny’s Tour stars battled the scorching St. Louis weather in the PBA’s Summer Series, won by Norm Duke and Walter Ray Williams. Fireballer Robert Smith (right) usually brings the heat wherever he bowls, but his heated kegling heaves paled in comparison to the readings of the on-lane temperatures. Remember the Helicopter Stylists? International stars Osku Palermaa and Jason Belmonte, along with Team USA member Cassidy Schaub and a number of lesser-heralded others, have made two-handed bowling a hot, new trend. The USBC has even instructed coaches to be open to the controversial high-rev technique. Salvino Reads from a New Book Carmen Salvino was one of the most outspoken critics of the Ambassador Program when the ABC first created it in the 1990s. The program has been given new life under the USBC banner, and Salvino now has joined the other Ambassadors. It was far from a cave-in. “The USBC got smart by allowing us to negotiate our fee with anybody who wants to book us,” explained the unrepentant Salvino. Coming Back from What?!? There was no argument when the Generations Bowling Tour declared David Ozio its 2006-07 Player of the Year. Based on his record, he had to be the runaway choice. Mark Roth also was named the GBT’s Comeback Player of the Year. It was not explained how somebody could score a “comeback” award in a tour’s first season of operation. Don’t I Already Have One of These? Fresh off winning the NCAA women’s championship, the kegling ladies from Vanderbilt University became the first college bowling team to be invited to the White House. Making the journey with them was a red, white and blue ball, which they proudly presented to the President. We don't know if President Bush was surprised or not. Ebonite gave him a similar ball several years ago. It’s Just a Small Slump Robert Mushtare, the teen from Carthage, N.Y., with two approved 900 series (and “possibly” uncertified others) to his credit, finished in 326th place at the U.S. Junior Gold Championships. You’d think practice would make, uh, perfect. He finished 282nd in 2006. Were They Post-Dated? The USBC, one might guess, does not like to waste its valuable paper. That must be why some bowlers who rolled honor scores received letters “signed” by Roger Dalkin… after the CEO had resigned. Quote of the Year Here was Arizona Republic business editor Steve Dauten’s assessment of PBA's ex-CEO Steve Miller after watching the DVD, A League of Ordinary Gentlemen: “I kept wondering how anybody, esspecially some former Microsoft guys, could pick this blathering egomaniac [to lead the Tour]. He was one of those guys who speaks with great intensity, as if conveying wisdom straight from God — then you realize he’s really saying nothing, a Moses who forgot the tablets.” bowlers journal international 38 JANUARY 2008 http://www.kaizenbydiandra.com http://www.kaizenbydiandra.com
