IT'S ABOUT TIME! AFTER WORKING AT LUBY PUBLISHING Inc. since 1981, and purchasing the company (with Mike Panozzo) back in 1994, our editors have finally decided to let me have a byline in BJI on a regular basis. Of course, the byline comes with limitations regarding what I can write about (ever try typing with handcuffs on?). But I'll usually take a look at some of the highlights of the magazine, and occasionally throw in my two cents' worth about what's happening in the world of bowling — even if I have to break into the printer's office and sneak in a line or two at press time. I know what you're thinking: Why can't the President of the company write about what he wants when he wants? Because it has taken me about 26 years of practice to meet the high journalistic standards set by the legendary Mort Luby Jr. and Jim Dressel. Now, as we head into our 95th anniversary year, some changes are looming. Dressel has been named Executive Editor, effective with this issue, with a less demanding schedule. In all my years in this business, I have never met anyone with as much pride and determination in serving bowling as Jim; he has earned the right to slow down a bit. We're also excited to announce that Bob Johnson has been promoted to Editor. We've asked Bob to oversee BJI's editorial package at this seminal juncture in the magazine's history. Bowlers Journal has always been a "hybrid," with departments and features covering all aspects of the sport and industry. And it will continue to be. But since our consumer readership has expanded in recent years, we henceforth will have a clear separation between our consumer and business editorial. Readers have asked for it, and we believe in listening to our readers. Readers also have asked for more coverage of the PBA Tour and its players, and more instruction-based stories. We will be delivering in those areas as well. A "new" BJI will emerge over the next few months, including a brand new, easier-toread design for the magazine. Johnson is uniquely qualified to oversee the enhancements we've planned. He joined Luby Publishing Inc. full-time in 2000, but has been a contributor to BJI for more than 25 years. He was a feature writer for LPI's Bowling Center Management prior to joining the BJI staff. As a scribe, Bob ranks third alltime with 48 awards in ABC/USBC's annual national writing competition. I'm sure he'll be an even better editor. As for Dressel, I only hope to see him honored with election to the USBC Hall of Fame one day. “This is one of the greatest innovations in professional ball drilling!
