VOIGHT GETS HONOR The National Senior Bowling Association has honored Mark Voight of Community Bowling Centers, who has been very supportive of the organization. The special presentation was made at the January 12 NSBA tournament in Troy, Michigan, by the NSBA's Phil Horowitz. A NEW COMBINATION Always on the lookout for something new, we came across a story in the Dayton Business Journal about the expansion of a combination entertainment complex/bowling center. The Joe Cogliano II-penned story detailed how J.D. Legends and Strike Zone Lanes are planning to open their second “joint” operation in Lebanon, Ohio, after enjoying some success in Franklin, and Nicholasville, Ky. Owner Wasfi Samaan plans to spend $2-$3 million on renovations for the 68,000-square-foot complex, 28,000 of which will be dedicated to the bowling side of the space. If the Lebanon location succeeds, Samaan says he would consider franchising the concept, which would involve buying larger buildings, using J.D. Legends as the anchor and marketing the extra space for lease. “There are so many empty buildings like this across the country,” he said. BOWLING 1, MOVIES 0 Bellevue, Wash.'s downtown pedestrian corridor, the center of the city's growing nightlife scene, has gained a bowling lounge and is in the process of losing a movie theater. According to the Seattle Times, Lucky Strike Lanes opened at the end of 2007 at Lincoln Square. Just to the east of that location, the new owners of the 8-year-old Bellevue Galleria are planning to replace the 11-screen theater with offices, a nod to the red-hot Bellevue office market. The bowling facility will be the first in downtown Bellevue in 15 years, with 12 public lanes, including plasma screens displaying artwork and film clips. "Bowling is the great equalizer between the CEO and the warehouse guy," said Franco D'Amico, general manager of the Bellevue location. IF THE SALVINO FITS Bowling icon Carmen Salvino will be helping Brunswick develop a fitness program for bowlers as part of the company’s Life Fitness division. He revealed the news during his appearance late last year on Phantom Radio. “They have a division of the company dedicated to fitness, so what could be more natural than to develop a program specifically tailored to bowling?” asked Salvino, whose fitness regimen is almost as legendary as he is. KEEGAN IS PRESIDENT Charlie Keegan was promoted to President and CEO of Main Event Holdings. Keegan assumed his responsibilities at the start of 2008. Neil Hupfauer will continue with the company to insure a smooth transition, remain on the Main Event Board, and continue to source new sites for future expansion of the Main Event portfolio. KIETZ STILL BOWLING Frank Kietz, believed to be the oldest active bowling writer at age 91, started his 92nd year in style by bowling a 222 game. Kietz, whose writing has appeared in the California 90 bowlers journal international Bowling News for decades, began his Christmas Eve bowling outing with a 159 game, and followed it with 188 and 178. Then in game 4, he rode a five-bagger to his 222.
