The defending champs are Bill Hoffman of Team USA and Ann Maree Putney of Australia, who captured the 2007 titles in St. Petersburg, Russia. > IN THE PADDOCK < Jouni Helminen of Finland defeated Tim Mack in the championship match to win the 2008 edition of one of Europe's most history-steeped tournaments, the Ballmaster at Tali Bowling Center in Helsinki. "Eleven years ago, I lost in the final," Helminen recalled. "I've been in the top eight several times, like last year. This is the tournament I've always wanted to win, and today I managed to block out everything else and said to myself, 'Just roll that bowling ball.'" Mack received some consolation as he won a one-game rolloff against fellow 300 game shooter Matias Kallio for a motorcycle, valued at 18,000 Euros. The 397-player field generated a record 808 entries Isao Yamamoto and Naoko Sekine captured the titles in the 31st ABS Japan Open Tournament at the Hata Bowling Center in Tokyo. In the men's championship match, Yamamoto defeated top-seeded Yudai Miike in back-to-back games, 247-156 and 264-225, to claim the ¥3 million first prize. Sekine claimed the women's crown with a 224-190 win over Yukari Oyama, and received ¥2 million. Yamamoto prevailed again in 41st All Japan Pro Bowling Tournament, downing Korea's Gu YongJin, 229-204, for another ¥3 million payday The final entry count for the 2008 USBC Open Championships is in: 12,615 teams. That makes it the second best-attended USBC Open/ABC Tournament outside of Reno, trailing only the 2005 event in Baton Rouge, La., which drew 13,222 teams Meanwhile, the entry deadline for the USBC Women's Championships, scheduled to begin April 10 in suburban Detroit, has been extended to March 21. All 1,728 spots have been sold for the event, which is scheduled to be held July 5-11 at three centers in suburban Detroit Tim Pfeifer and Sarah Lokker rolled to well-earned victories in the annual Sport Challenge tournament of the Alro Steel Michigan Junior Masters Association. Pfeifer took the boys' title with a 182-178 win over Trey Raynes, while Lokker locked up the young ladies' crown with a 208-198 triumph over Valerie Calberry. KREFT RULES 'THE D' Many local association Masters tournaments have gone by the wayside, but Metro Detroit's is still going strong. Just ask Kerry Kreft of Warren, Mich., who earned $4,000 for winning the 2008 Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters at Cloverlanes in Livonia, Mich. The tournament is patterned after the USBC Masters, and features double-elimination match play with each match consisting of three games. Kreft made it through the winners bracket unscathed, then took on losers bracket survivor Paul Koehler of Roseville, Mich. Koehler beat Kreft, 670-651, necessitating a second match for all the marbles. In that one, Kreft prevailed, 644-616.
