I GET E-MAILS ALL THE TIME FROM AMBITIOUS BOWLERS who want to know how to become a professional bowler. I tell them there are definite strategies that, if followed through on, would put them in the best possible position to get to that level — or to any level they'd aspire to reach. So, to all those out there who dream of being on the PBA's exempt Tour with the best bowlers in the world and to those who just want to be the best bowler in their league this is for you. ■ Strategy Numero Uno: Figure out where you want to be and how you’re going to get there. Write it down. In red. (It happens faster that way.) You don’t have to admit to anyone that you wrote it down. Hide it away, but look at it often (sock drawer, maybe?). We will call strategy Numero Uno: “Goals.” ■ Strategy Deuce: Learn more than you know. A lot more. How do we do this? Begins with a “C” and ends with an “oach.” Get one. It’s really hard to get to the next level if you don’t really know what level you're on. Find an honest coach who will help you turn your weaknesses into strengths. ■ Strategy Treo: I tried to think of a line about practice that didn’t include a cliché, but was unsuccessful. So, here it is: Practice makes perfect. Since I don’t believe there is such a thing as “perfect,” I’ll amend the cliché to read: Practice makes as close to perfect as you’ll ever get. When I was in elementary school, I wasn’t very good in math. Did I practice it at home in my free time? No. You think I got any better at math? No. They say that in order to establish a habit, you have to repeat it dozens of times. And if you already have a habit that you need to break in order to establish a new, better habit? The number goes to thousands. No hard job is ever easy. (Write that one down!) Just know that if you are struggling to learn something and you can’t quite get it down… try harder. ■ Strategy Quartet: Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and will give you money to try your luck at this crazy/cool sport. Sponsors are key. Many think that once you land some good deals with major companies, you’ve made it. The problem is few people know how to get those deals. Here’s how: win. You'll get the attention of many potential sponsors by how you fare in tournaments. You can write to the companies and go on and on about how great you are and how hard you work, but the truth is they won’t take a second look at you until you give them proof that you can win — often. There it is — Diandra’s strategies for building a viable bowling career. In four words: Goals. Coaching. Practice. Sponsors. Now go out and get yourself some! ✦ Doubles ✦ Team ✦ All Events ✦ Pins Over Average SINGLES 1st Prize 2nd Prize 3rd Prize $20,000 $10,500 $5,000 100th Prize $950 Based on 5,500 Entries ● 8 games across 16 lanes www.thePetersen.com Based at Where Else But AMF HOFFMAN LANES 80 West Higgins Road Hoffman Estates, IL 60195 “Petersen Events Make Bowlers Content” 26 bowlers journal international MARCH 2008 http://www.thePetersen.com
