Bowlers Journal International - March 2008 - (Page 32) DENNY'STOUR BY J.R. SCHMIDT NOW, SCROGGINS HAS 2 'DICK WEBER STORIES' AS THE OTHER FINALISTS BURNED UP THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE LANES, THE CHAMPION-TO-BE SAW THE LEFT SIDE GET 'BETTER.' HE WON HIS LAST 3 MATCHES BY AN AVERAGE OF 51 PINS. IT SEEMS THAT ANYONE WHO EVER MET him has a Dick Weber story to tell. Mike Scroggins, who won the Motel 6-sponsored tournament named for Weber at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley, Calif., is no exception. In 2004, Scroggins won the Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic. Any victory on the PBA Tour is sweet, but that one was made even more so when, not long thereafter, Weber gave Scroggins some hand-clipped newspaper articles PBA LLC / NODA THERECAP PBA MOTEL 6 DICK WEBER OPEN January 15-20, 2008 Fountain Bowl Fountain Valley, Calif. 1. Mike Scroggins displays the glass pin, emblematic of his victory in the Motel 6 Dick Weber Open. Now, Scroggins has two "Dick Weber stories" that he can tell. detailing the win. "He said, 'Mike, put these away and always remember how you felt that day,'" Scroggins recalls. "For a legend to come up after a tournament and give me press clippings that he actually cut out — I'll never forget that." Scroggins likely won't forget his triumph in the 2007 Motel 6 Dick Weber Open, either. Among the bowlers he had to beat on the 32 bowlers journal international MARCH 2008 championship round telecast was Weber's son, Pete. Their encounter opened the show, and it wasn't pretty. In an effort to replicate the "feel" of PBA events when the elder Weber was piling up his 26 titles, the tournament was open to all comers (167 players shoed up), match play was round-robin, and a unique oil pattern was utilized. It may not have been a "reverse block" when it was laid down, but it quickly evolved into an extremely difficult condition. That proved to be a big deal on the telecast, which featured the left-handed Scroggins and four right-handers — Weber, Tommy Delutz Jr., Jack Jurek and Chris Barnes. It was a mirror image of the previous week's Lumber Liquidators Earl Anthony Medford Classic, in which three lefties and one righty made the show, and right-hander Wes Malott prevailed. The Scroggins-Weber match, which opened the telecast in Fountain Valley, could well have determined the Dick Weber Open champion. "I knew whoever survived that match would probably go a long way," Scroggins said. How unpredictable were the lanes? In one frame, Weber converted the tricky 4-9 split. In another, he got a three-count on his first (wild) pitch, picking off just the 3-, 6- and 10-pins. Was that three-count costly? You do the math: Scroggins won by a score of 204-197. After that, it was relatively clear sailing for Scroggins, who took the next three matches by an average of 51 pins. He dispatched Delutz by 45, then beat Jurek and Barnes by 55 apiece. On the right side, the oil movement played havoc with the players, as Delutz got off to a slow start (one open and only one strike in the first four frames), Jurek started even more slowly (no strikes in the first five frames), and Barnes ran into a 4-6 split and a 1-2-4-10 washout in back-to-back frames. The right side was burning up. Meanwhile, "On my side, the lanes definitely got better," Scroggins acknowledged. And that pretty much sums up this "Dick Weber story."
