Bowlers Journal International - April 2008 - (Page 87) INTELLIGENCER and buzz around the air station is building by the day,” MCCS marketing officer Steve Howard said. The high cost to upgrade the existing bowling facility and the need to keep up with changes in the sport persuaded base officials to invest in a larger entertainment center, Howard told reporter Travis J. Tritten of Stars and Stripes. Construction of the new $9.5 million facility began last April. It “will be a state-of-the-art entertainment center for all residents — from the single Marine to the family of six — all in one giant center,” Howard said. QUOTE/UNQUOTE ■ BPAA Executive Director John Berglund on why USBC's move to Arlington will benefit the Congress: "Proprietors will play games with the rules, which is why we don’t trust ourselves. Therefore, we absolutely need the USBC." ■ Also from Berglund: "We’re not going to slash and burn an industry in which we have so much invested," he said. "We believe the move will help fix the sport so it can grow again." ■ When Rob May recently revisited Portland's Grand Central Bowl after the center underwent a two-year, $14-million hybrid renovation, he noted that it "doesn't feel like you're committed to bowling," according to reporter Wade Nkrumah in The Oregonian. "It feels like you're committed to a night out." ■ USBC Board President Jeff Bojé on the "new" USBC: "I think we’re beyond all of those big rules fights because the USBC Board clearly understands that you cannot make any rule that you either cannot enforce or is not wanted by the customer. That’s why the PBA Experience league is so vital. We’re not forcing it on anybody." PEOPLE THE BPAA'S OLDEST LIVING former President, Joe Paulus, passed away in March in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. He was 90. Paulus was practically a Michigan JOE PAULUS legend, and served in the BPAA's top job from 1958-1960. After 28 years, Jim Faltinek is stepping down as President and CEO of the National Sporting Goods Association. Faltinek will be on board until May 2, the date of his announced retirement. A successor is scheduled to be chosen in April. Jamie Brooks and Randy Isenberg have purchased the 56-lane Bandera Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, a center which was built in 1987. Brooks is a former BPAA President, and the new owners plan an extensive remodeling of the facility. This is the seventh center for Brooks and the sixth for Isenberg. Randy Pedersen, ESPN's color analyst for the Denny's PBA Tour, will be guest speaker at the California Bowling Writers media luncheon on April 26 in Foster City, Calif. The luncheon will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Randy Little has left his post as the bowling honcho of The Amend Group in Dallas, Texas. Little joined the firm five years ago when owner John Amend first expressed a very public interest in becoming more involved in the industry, an intention splashed on the cover of the May 2003 Bowlers Journal. Oregon's "Andy" Anderson, 94, has passed away. Anderson was known as a top-notch bowler, a friendly proprietor and a great instructor. He also was a PBA pioneer, holding card No. 10. SPOKESMAN BELMONTE The USBC has tabbed Australian two-handed bowler Jason Belmonte as an international spokesperson for youth and the burgeoning two-handed delivery. In those roles, Belmonte will promote the sport, while emphasizing the two-handed technique that has become popular with youth bowlers and that he has used to win several major tournaments worldwide. Belmonte, 24, will assist the national governing body and its coaching certification program in developing curriculum for the two-handed style that will be added to USBC coach training manuals.
