Bowlers Journal International - November 2008 - (Page 20) Inside Line News, Notes And Perspective Media Beat NEW BLOGS, A STUNNING STAT, A LETTER FROM ST. LOUIS & A PUZZLE What’s it like being a rookie on the PBA Tour? Andrew Cain will be providing his perspective on that topic all season long in a new weekly blog on pba.com. All told, four new blogs will be featured on the site, including “Jason’s TV Recap,” authored by super fan Jason Thomas John Chacko Jr. of Larksville, Pa., is credited with an even 100 (although that number could have changed since you started reading this sentence) certified three-game series of 800 or higher. That eye-opening statistic was revealed by Editor Bill Vint in the September issue of the Windy City Bowling News. Vint pointed out that not only is the stat amazing, but it’s stunning that few people are even aware of it. “I think I’m an above-average student of the game, and one who appreciates historical accomplishments,” Vint wrote in his “Perspective” column. “But I have to be honest here. I have no idea who John Chacko Jr. is.” Chicago Tribune Midwest correspondent Tim Jones recently penned a “Letter from St. Louis” on the impending move of the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame from St. Louis to Arlington, Texas. Jones described the move as “another lost chunk of Midwestern identity Partisans will argue the capital of the bowling universe was Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee or Chicago. Wherever it was, the heart seemed to be distinctly Midwestern.” Seeking to ride the wave of the Sudoko craze that has swept airport lounges, commuter trains and, apparently, bowling center restrooms, the California Bowling News recently featured a puzzle dubbed “Bowling Newsudoku.” MARKET PLACE HAMMER “With a new core and cover designed for domination, The Sauce offers the best combination of aggressive power and complete control in the Hammer lineup,” says Hammer Brand Manager Jeff Ussery. The ball offers aggressive mid-lane with strong backend continuation, and comes with a 4000-grit Abralon finish. INFO lane1bowling.com WEB WATCH mdusbc.com What’s this? An association Web site that doesn’t bring derision to the forefront of my mental being? Yes, it’s true: mdusbc.com, the site of the Metro Detroit USBC Association, is not painful to visit. In fact, if you are looking for information on Detroit-area bowling, it can actually be a pleasant experience. Looking for one of Detroit’s many bowling centers? Mdusbc.com has them all in alphabetical order, with telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. Looking to contact an association board member? This Web site has e-mail address links for everyone, making it a snap to get in touch with the person you need. Tournament information, league info, award info… it’s all very easy to access and very clear and to the point. One thing, though, was mildly irritating. Where’s the Hall of Fame information? Detroit is one of the great bowling cities. So, where is the historical information that some bowlers crave? The “records” section offers statistical oddities and an Excel spreadsheet of the most recent HOF inductees… but a specific section devoted to Detroit bowling history would be nice. Without that information, mdusbc.com is like a hot-fudge sundae without the hot-fudge: still enjoyable, but clearly not what it could be.
