It’s almost like you can’t catch your breath or settle down for fear of missing some new tool or training you need to keep in the game. Just last Tuesday my phone buzzed with a text message from a morning show DJ, at 4:25 AM! He needed information on E-85/Flex Fuel vehicles for a breaking story on Ethanol. Heck, I can’t even get a good night’s sleep! It may sound like I’m complaining, but that’s just my way of coping with the stress. As my wife Elissa would tell you, I really wouldn’t have it any other way, and I feel blessed to be able to do what I do. Now, as Paul Harvey would say, here’s the rest of the story. Elissa and I were invited to an Indians/White Socks game last week by friends with season tickets. Tom is an avid fan and knows Cleveland baseball like I know Rochester carburetors. He knows everything, including the life-story of most of the vendors and nearby season ticket holders. A story he told about Jim, one of the drink vendors, hit close to home. Jim was very animated and also very professional. You could tell that he loved what he did and wanted to be there. Jim was so friendly, so professional and at the same time jovial and entertaining; you simply wanted to purchase something from him and give him a big tip. In fact, I would bypass all the other vendors and wait for Jim to come back around to sell me drinks. Tom told me that Jim has hit a rough spot in life. He has been through a few job changes in the downturn, his wife is gravely ill and his child has a disability. Tom said that Jim holds down three jobs to make ends meet and support his family. Jim is truly a hero who doesn’t let life get him down. Jim is not just excellent at his job, he is also inspirational. We see most of our clients several times a year. How many of us can say that our clients feel the same way about us and our business as I did about Jim in just a few short innings? Do your clients want to do business with you and only you? How many of us complain about business, our vendors, our employees and life in general without realizing how lucky we are? All of us who know the joy and sense of accomplishment from tackling and repairing something challenging, we are blessed, and we should reflect that attitude to all. I reaffirmed an old lesson at the ballpark last week. I know that I will be a bit better at letting clients know that I want to be there and that I truly appreciate them letting us work on their vehicles. Thanks Jim!!
