ule to the telematics module. Most OEM telematics modules act as
a serial data gateway, meaning they are equipped to communicate on
multiple serial bus networks to allow for remote vehicle electronic diagnostics. Most telematics modules are also equipped with a GPS receiver
and cell phone transceiver operating on the cellular provider's 3G or 4G
network and communicate via a vehicle microphone input and low level
audio output signals connected to the vehicle's audio system.
All of this must be done in a concerted manner that reduces driver
distraction. Technologies like HMI (Human Machine Interface) are helping bring driver displays and controls from static to dynamic (changing as
driving conditions / needs change) in order to have the proverbial "having
your cake" (being connected and entertained) and "eating it too" (safer
and less distracted) experience. In fact, GM's OnStar module functionality has evolved to the point for engineers to change its name from OnStar
VCI (Vehicle Communications Interface) to HMI (Human Machine Interface).
Prime telematics example: Ford Sync
A prime example of how far technology in the area of telematics has evolved is Ford's Sync. A cooperative effort between Microsoft and Ford, Sync allows the smart gadgets we carry with us to
integrate into the vehicle in a more seamless manner via numerous
PC applications. Utilizing Bluetooth and USB connections, Sync's
female voice (her name is Samantha just in case you ever wondered)
can recognize speech via voice commands to assist you in making
hands-free phone calls, radio commands, text messages and more.

F.R.E.D. Goes to Tomorrowland
Shown are scan tool data PIDs from the GPS module
used as an input to the Ford Sync system. When GPS
isn't available (tunnels or shadowed by tall building)
the airbag module (RCM - Restraint Control Module)
comes into play via the MS CAN bus to use its Gyro sensor along with the odometer reading from the cluster to
determine vehicle position until GPS satellites are in view.
That's 3 modules coming together to help you keep track
of your location!
