Tooling up for the
A/C season

his issue of MACS ACTION™ magazine includes a review of the MACS 2017
Training Event and Trade Show, with a focus on the tools needed to provide
the professional, efficient service and repairs your customers demand.
The selection of the best tools and equipment and their proper use is one topic
found throughout MACS training programs. The MACS Section 609 Certification program explains the need for the right tools, and safe and proper use and
maintenance of tools and equipment for leak detection, refrigerant recovery and
recycling, and refrigerant conservation. The MACS annual Mobile A/C Update
clinics always cover the latest tools, and the MACS Mobile A/C Best Practices
clinics lists the tools required for mobile A/C service and repair.
MACS also offers Maximizing your A/C tools and Equipment. This class, conducted at shops and fleet maintenance locations provides hands-on demonstrations
of tools and equipment. This course discusses how to select and use the right
tool for the job during a mobile A/C repair. Tools covered include refrigerant
identifiers, electronic leak detectors, ultraviolet dye type leak detection systems,
refrigerant recovery/recycling machines for R-134a, R-1234yf, manifold gauges,
vacuum pumps, refrigerant weighing scales and/or charging cylinders. There are
also various temperature measuring devices, such as dial thermometers, digital pyrometers, infrared thermometers, etc., digital multi-meters, scan tools, hose repair
crimping tools, spring lock coupling disassembly and service tools. A/C service
fitting service tools, orifice tube service tools, cooling system pressure testers,
cooling system flush and recycling equipment, compressor clutch service tools,
hand held vacuum pumps, battery/charging system testers, charging/service hose
sets, coolant refractometers, heat guns, and recovery only machines are among
myriad tools, as well.
Tools also need maintenance and MACS offers checklists on the resources
page of our website (www.macsw.org) to track the maintenance intervals on your
tools. For example, maintenance practices for your recovery machine like purging
air from the refrigerant tank, checking/calibrating the scale, verifying gauge scale,
checking/replacing hoses, checking/repairing power cords, vacuum pump oil, and
replacing filters and driers can be found at the site.
The temperature is rising, so have a great A/C season and take care of your
