o Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Co. in Tumacacori specializes in chile pepper products. SOMETHING UNEXPECTED Seafood in the desert? You bet—if you’re at Desert Sweet Shrimp in Gila Bend. All summer long, this farm grows shrimp in ponds on what used to be a cotton farm. In November, sample the delicious harvest at the Desert Shrimp Fest. Partake in shrimp bobbing, sandcastle building, a cook-off and plenty of shrimp-inspired foods. In the southeast portion of the state lies Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Co. Located across from the historic mission in Tumacacori, this spice company gets the chile peppers for its products from a farm in Pearce, about 145 miles to the east. The tiny retail space is filled with jars of spices, cookbooks (including its own) and delicious samples, as well as a collection of antiques and photographs that tell the history of this Santa Cruz Valley ranching family. If you’re along the state’s eastern border, head north to Concho in the White Mountains for a visit to Red Rock Ranch & Farms. Plan your visit during the Lavender Festival in late June or early July, when the lavender fields are in bloom. Take advantage of tours, cooking and craft demonstrations, U-pick fields and lavender lemonade stands. You can also learn how to grow your own lavender plants. from FARM to TABLE Local farmers and ranchers supply many of the ingredients at a number of restaurants around the state. Here is a sampling of eateries where you can dig in to local flavors. Take a vineyard tour, then end your day with a tasting. In Southern Arizona, the towns of Sonoita and Elgin offer vintages from Arizona’s oldest vineyard and winery region. Since the 1970s, the area has been fermenting and serving Arizona-grown varietals. During the summer harvest festivals, follow up your vineyard tour with some grape stomping. Or come in April for the Blessing of the Vines. At least two new tasting rooms in historic downtown Willcox are good reasons to wind down at Southeastern Arizona vineyards and wineries. Touring the vineyards during harvest season is another. If beer’s more your thing, you can try the handcrafted brew nearby at Prescott Brewing Company, or at several brewpubs in the metro Phoenix area, such as Four Peaks Brewing Company and San Tan Brewing Company. Along Arizona’s West Coast you can pull up a stool and order a cold one at Mudshark Brewing Company in Lake Havasu. Whet your whistle with a flight of six different beers, each crafted on-site. From wine and apples to shrimp and pie, it seems as though there’s no end to the fresh and flavorful foods made right here in Arizona. k Sample suds of the Southwest at Tempe’s Four Peaks Brewing Company. k (Far right) You can sample Arizona wines at numerous restaurants around the state. 18 Arizona 2011 Official State Visitor’s Guide http://www.binkleysrestaurant.com http://harvest.marketrg.com http://www.binkleysrestaurant.com http://harvest.marketrg.com http://www.caferoka.com http://www.wildhorsepassresort.com http://www.wildhorsepassresort.com http://www.cafeboa.com http://www.maynardsmarket.com/kitchen http://www.cafesonoita.com http://www.maynardsmarket.com/kitchen http://www.tubacgolfresort.com http://www.diabloburger.com http://www.tubacgolfresort.com http://www.tarbells.com http://www.fnbrestaurant.com
