TUCSON & SOUTHERN ARIZONA Southern Arizona’s desert peoples—the Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui—welcome visitors to the Tucson area for unique festivities honoring tribal communities. The New Year’s Competition Pow-Wow in Tucson spotlights local tribal dances and art as well as the pan-Indian tradition of the powwow. In February, Arizona State Museum’s signature event, the Southwest Indian Art Fair, features more than 200 local native artists, delicious foods and entertainment. The San Xavier Mission Indian Market in November is a great way to experience both local artists and the “White Dove of the Desert,” one of Dig out your poodle skirt and slick back that pompadour for Route 66 Days in April. Peach Springs on the Hualapai Nation is one of the stops for this “fun run” that helps preserve the storied past of America’s highway. Head to the Navajo Nation’s capital, Window Rock, in summer for Treaty Days Celebration. Learn more about the Navajo Nation’s Treaty of 1868, which established today’s reservation lands. Also enjoy a rodeo, traditional games like a woodchopping competition and the pots and pans race, and, of course, scrumptious Navajo tacos. Also in June, Tuba City hosts the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribal Recognition Pow Wow. With a powwow, rodeo, re-created Yavapai village, parade and more, this is a celebration you won’t want to miss. The December Pueblo Grande Museum Indian Market features more than 200 Indian artists in the setting of an old Hohokam village site at Pueblo Grande Museum near downtown Phoenix.
