Be entranced by the driving beat of the powwow drum at Hon Dah Resort-Casino’s Pow Wow in the Pines in June. What better way to beat the heat of the state’s lower elevations than with a dose of cool native culture? The San Carlos Apache Tribe celebrates Apache Independence Day in June. Events include an Apache ranch rodeo, a wikieup building contest, a women’s camp dress contest, an Apache village with Apache card games, traditional Apache musicians and Crown Dancers, arts and crafts, food vendors and traditional Apache food contests. In July, run with the San Carlos Apache community for the preservation of one of its most sacred sites during the Mt. Graham Sacred Run. The tribal community welcomes respectful visitors to participate in the run. Also in July are the White Mountain Native American Art Festival in Pinetop and the Apache Arts & Crafts Festival at Hawley Lake on the White Mountain Apache reservation. Meet the artists, then bring home special gifts for others—or for yourself. Another great tribal fair is held in the White Mountain Apache community. The White Mountain Apache Tribal Fair & Rodeo, held in September, features thrilling rodeo events, powwow and cultural dances, and a parade, all Apache style. Wrapping up our journey is a tribute to veterans at the San Carlos Veterans’ Day Rodeo. Honor those who have served our nation with this fantastic November showcase of cowboy skills. One tribal member says this powwow features “front-row seating for everybody” and is one of Arizona’s best-kept secrets. It’s back to Parker in November for the AllIndian Rodeo, hosted by the Colorado River Indian Tribes. Get your best boot-scootin’ moves on for this great little cowboy and cowgirl fest.
