NIGHTLIFE When the sun goes down over Central Arizona, nighthawks have plenty of happy hunting grounds. Among downtown Scottsdale’s hottest dance clubs, Axis/Radius and Myst have had far more than 15 minutes of fame. For more casual moods, Char’s Has The Blues in Phoenix lays on soulful sounds. For romance, it’s hard to surpass T. Cook’s lounge at Royal Palms Resort and Spa or Jade Bar at Sanctuary Resort and Spa. Pick your sips: Top Phoenix wine bars include Postino or Cheuvront and, of Tempe’s many brewpubs, Four Peaks Brewing Company stands out for its kicked-back patio and its Elvis shrine. Sports-oriented? At Alice Cooper’stown, near the Phoenix arenas, multiple TVs broadcast the games and servers wear makeup k Postino’s two Phoenix locations offer celebrated wine lists. like that of the shock-rocking owner, a local. COURTESY OF WE-KO-PA GOLF CLUB OFFBEAT AZ The self-proclaimed World’s Smallest Museum in Superior packs its 134 square feet with “ordinary life” exhibits, including a 1984 Compaq computer. Its other claim to fame: Arizona’s largest Apache Tear, a brown gemstone. LES DAVID MANEVITZ With its abundant m We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, Fort McDowell Yavapai g o l f s c h o o l s, g o l f Reservation shops, golf vacation packages and golf courses—nearly 200 of them—Greater Phoenix is a duffer’s dream. Many newer courses have a target (desert) design, but you can still find plenty of traditional greens. Among consistently praised courses are Tom Fazio’s challenging Raptor at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale; the Native American-owned We-Ko-Pa Golf Club on the Fort McDowell Yavapai Reservation, with unobstructed mountain views; Jay Morrish’s two courses at The Boulders Resort in Carefree, known for their eye-popping scenery; and Dinosaur Mountain at Gold Canyon Golf Resort, with unusual elevation changes. Traditionalists enjoy the Scottish-style links laid out by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore at Talking Stick Golf Club on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian lands. Pete Dye designed ASU-Karsten Golf Course in Tempe as a bit of a hybrid, adding desert accents to the turfed areas. Tee times at two excellent, inexpensive municipal courses, Papago in Phoenix and the Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale, are highly sought after. Among the area’s Hohokam settlements are the village interpreted at the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park in Phoenix and the more sophisticated structures—one of them likely an observatory—at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument near the city of Casa Grande. Members of the Gila River Indian Community, believed to be descendants of the Hohokam, pay tribute to the ancient culture at the Huhugam Heritage Center in Chandler. A variety of migrations and cultures are reflected in the petroglyphs at Deer Valley Rock Art Center, north of Phoenix. www.arizonaguide.com 31 NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE m Learn about the area’s early Hohokam settlers at the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.
