WINTER SPORTS
Snow may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Arizona, but think again. More than two million acres of high-elevation pine forest punctuated with mountain ranges turn large swathes of Northern Arizona a cool white every winter. Top spots to schuss include Arizona Snowbowl, in the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, with 32 runs appealing to all skill levels; Elk Ridge Ski and Outdoor Recreation Area, in the Kaibab National Forest near Williams, fun for families with its snowboarding playscapes; and the huge Sunrise Park Resort outside Greer in the White Mountains— its 65 runs are spread over three peaks.
When Southern Arizonans want to experience the seasons as most of the country knows them, they head for the White Mountains, laced with lakes, thicketed with forests and dotted with small rural towns. Most outdoor activities center around Pinetop-Lakeside, which also has the most dining and lodging options. Show Low’s camping areas and fishing lakes attract anglers in search of Arizona’s state fish, the Apache trout. Tiny, woodsy Greer is a romantic getaway. The scenery shifts into high desert around the twin towns of Springerville and Eager, and back to alpine (including a town of that name) when you head south along the spectacular Coronado Trail Scenic Byway, 123 adrenaline-pumping miles of pine forest and sharp switchbacks.
