The Native America, Past Navajo National Monument preserves dwellings built into soaring, pine-shrouded ochre cliffs by the ancestral Puebloans—forebears of the modern Hopi and Zuni, among others— as does Canyon de Chelly National Monument, where two rim drives afford vistas of these ancient homes. The Sinagua settled the volcanic area around Flagstaff, as seen at Wupatki National Monument, notable for its high-rise pueblo, and at Walnut Canyon National Monument, a lushly m Canyon de Chelly National Monument forested canyon with protected niches. The Grand Canyon, for example, carved out by the Colorado River, exposes rocks that are nearly 2 billion years old. Most visitors just love the dramatic scenery, including Canyon de Chelly, Antelope Canyon and other slot canyons near Page; the buttes and mesas of Monument Valley; the windswept expanses of Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert; and such (relatively) late volcanic creations as Sunset Crater and the San Francisco Peaks.
