The Native America, Past Navajo National Monument preserves dwellings built into soaring, pine-shrouded ochre cliffs by the ancestral Puebloans—forebears of the modern Hopi and Zuni, among others— as does Canyon de Chelly National Monument, where two rim drives afford vistas of these ancient homes. The Sinagua settled the volcanic area around Flagstaff, as seen at Wupatki National Monument, notable for its high-rise pueblo, and at Walnut Canyon National Monument, a lushly m Canyon de Chelly National Monument forested canyon with protected niches. The high-elevation volcanic fields around Springerville in the White Mountains were also settled by the ancestral Puebloans, who created Casa Malpais’ unusual fissure pueblos. Navajo tourism enterprises include The View Hotel, with Monument Valley vistas, and the restaurant at the Cameron Trading Post, serving excellent frybread Indian tacos. At the Tuuvi Café near Tuba City and the Hopi Cultural Center restaurant on Second Mesa, you can enjoy such local specialties as noqkwivi (hominy stew). Native guides on the Hopi mesas bring visitors to artists’ homes, and Moenkopi Legacy Inn and Suites encourages visitors to stay overnight. The White Mountain Apaches operate the Hon-Dah Resort Casino—the only gaming business in this region—but the tribe is better known for its White Mountain recreation, especially snow skiing at Sunrise Park Resort. The Grand Canyon, for example, carved out by the Colorado River, exposes rocks that are nearly 2 billion years old. Most visitors just love the dramatic scenery, including Canyon de Chelly, Antelope Canyon and other slot canyons near Page; the buttes and mesas of Monument Valley; the windswept expanses of Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert; and such (relatively) late volcanic creations as Sunset Crater and the San Francisco Peaks. Some of these landscapes just look otherworldly, but one actually is: Meteor Crater, the result of a 150-foot space rock hurtling to Earth at 26,000 mph. www.arizonaguide.com 67 Unique Landscapes m Monument Valley’s otherworldly terrain Stream fishing on The Little Colorado http://www.springerville-eagarchamber.com http://www.springerville-eagarchamber.com http://www.arizonaguide.com
