In the Salt River Valley, Tonto National Monument showcases the natural cave apartments occupied by Salado farmers from the 12th through 15th centuries. On flatter ground—and thus more accessible for exploring—are the Salado homes at Besh-Ba-Gowah Archaeological Park near Globe.
