Thousands of acres of wetlands are protected along the lower Colorado River near Yuma in the Imperial and Cibola national wildlife refuges, hosting nearly 300 avian species, including migratory songbirds, waterfowl and even bald eagles. North of Parker, one of the last stands of natural cottonwood-willow forest along the lower Colorado attracts a variety of fauna to Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge. Three riverside state parks in the area always harbor a large population of nature lovers: Buckskin Mountain, Cattail Cove and Lake Havasu. For a pristine desert experience, head inland to the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, where bighorn sheep stand guard on rugged mountain ledges and one of Arizona’s few native palms grows on the plains.
