North Central Arizona’s Mogollon Rim offers excellent hiking and camping opportunities. Expect the unexpected: antiques, spas, dude ranches, ghost towns, red rocks and an underground river BY EDIE JAROLIM North Central Arizona AOT/TODD BRENNEMAN OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Sedona provides the outdoor-inclined with an array of ways to ogle its red rock and forest scenery, including jeep touring, hiking, hot air ballooning and mountain biking. Near Prescott, a Rails-to-Trails route along the former Santa Fe Railroad tracks is one of many hiker favorites, rugged landmarks like Thumb Butte draw rock climbers, and fat-tire enthusiasts enjoy the area’s many forest trails. North of Payson, a collection of lakes hugging the Mogollon Rim offers respite for campers and anglers. Sedona and Prescott are also duffer friendly, offering a variety of golf courses for all levels and layout preferences. Village, but arty enclaves also dot Highway 179 just south of town en route to Cottonwood. In Jerome, shops purveying pottery, jewelry, weavings and kaleidoscopes line the main drag. The woodsy twin communities of Pine and Strawberry specialize in country crafts, including quilts. ANTIQUES SHOPPING More Midwestern than Southwestern in style, Prescott has some 300 Victorian buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and a number of antiques shops. Many carry traditional pieces, but others, especially those on Cortez Street, specialize in Western items such as 1950s cowboy-revival furniture and Zane Grey first editions. The shops and galleries in historic downtown Miami—of GlobeMiami mining town fame—show a similar range of antiques, everything from Depression glass to Western collectibles.
